From the President

I made my first “public appearance” as Wolverhampton Law Society President on 3rd July when I attended the so-called “Gift Box”.

A temporary art –installation brought to Wolverhampton at the initiative of Bilston Soroptimists the “Gift –Box” is aimed at supporting the UN’s global initiative to raise awareness about human trafficking. Complete with beautiful wrapping and with a ribbon on top from the outside the “Gift Box” appears enticing and full of promise. However, once you get beyond the attractive exterior what lies behind is a portrayal of the harsh realities of human trafficking.

The Gift Box was in Dudley Street for 2 days drawing attention to this worthy cause and attracting plenty of interest from members of the public.

I am pictured below with Nerys Rees of Bilston Soroptimists.

UN initiative to fight Human Trafficking comes to Wolverhampton

Bilston Soroptimists have launched an initiative to bring the aptly named “GIFT box” to Wolverhampton on 3rd & 4th July. This is part of a UN Global initiative to raise awareness of the extent of human trafficking and the devastating impact that this has upon peoples lives. Using the simple but stark strap line “People Shouldn’t Be Bought & Sold” the campaign involves an art installation called “GIFT box” which provides a challenging metaphor of how Traffickers prey upon the vulnerable.

In an appeal to the local legal profession to support the event Soroptimist Jackie Brookes said:-

“The members of the Wolverhampton Law Society have dedicated their careers to upholding the Rule of Law and thus maintaining a civilised society that we are all privileged to live in. However, none of us can afford to be complacent. Human Trafficking represents a Global threat to the basic tenets of human decency and that threat extends to our own doorsteps even here in Wolverhampton. So I would like to extend an invitation to the members of the Society to visit the GIFT box when it comes to Wolverhampton. Come and see what the initiative is about and then spread the word.”
